Salmon Hatcheries
The mission of the Lummi Nation’s salmon
hatchery program is to sustain artificial production of salmon in
order produce and release salmon smolts in such a way so as to
maximize the number which return to the Usual and Accustomed fishing
areas for harvest opportunities by members of the Lummi Indian
Nation. Salmon plays an important role in the lives of Lummi
people, in ceremonial proceedings, dinners, and their daily lives.
Shellfish Hatchery
The
mission of the Lummi Nation’s Shellfish Hatchery is to produce
oysters, manila clams, geoducks, and other native and potential
aquaculture species for the benefit of tribal members using the
tideland resources of the Lummi Nation. The hatchery provides
shellfish seed for enhancing the Tribe’s tidelands, provides
employment for Lummi tribal members, and produces oyster and clam
seed and market-size manila clams for sale to outside companies.
These activities are conducted for the benefit of the Lummi people
in accordance with the policy and procedures of the Lummi Nation. |
