Lummi Indian Business Council (LIBC) adopted Resolution No. 2014-084 Guiding Principles to Address Climate Change on May 27, 2014. The LIBC recognized that climate change is a direct, serious, and substantial threat to the political integrity, economic security, health, and welfare of the Lummi Nation. The LIBC directed the LIBC administration to:

  • develop goals to address the potential effects of climate change
  • develop policies and strategies based on those goals
  • develop and implement actions to address impacts of climate change and reduce Lummi Nation contributions to climate change

In 2016, per Resolution 2016-040, the LIBC adopted the Lummi Nation Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plan: 2016-2026. The Climate Plan evaluated the potential impacts of climate change on the Lummi Indian Reservation, Lummi Usual and Accustomed Grounds and Stations (U&A), and Lummi Traditional Territories. It provided both strategies to reduce the causes of climate change and adaptation strategies to minimize climate change impacts that cannot be avoided.

In 2023, LNR created the Climate Division to add capacity to address climate change. Climate Division staff are currently working on the next 10-year update of the Lummi Nation Climate Plan!
