Substance Use Disorder Professional Trainee (SUDPT)

Qwa'ya'hud (Mathew Hewett Sr., SUDPT) is an enrolled member of the Lummi Nation whose work is grounded in culture, recovery, and service to the community. He is the son of Debra Martin and the grandson of Francis Martin Jr. and Edith Simmonds, carrying forward the teachings and values of his Coast Salish ancestors.Qwa'ya'hud has worked with the Lummi Indian Business Council (LIBC) for nearly six years and is deeply committed to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use disorders. With seven years in personal recovery, he brings both lived experience and professional expertise to his work. He is a Certified Recovery Coach, a Certified Peer Counselor, and a Substance Use Disorder Professional Trainee (SUDPT).Currently, he is attending Northwest Indian College, where he is pursuing an Associate of Technical Arts (ATA) degree in Chemical Dependency Studies. His passion is helping members of the Lummi community reconnect with wellness by combining evidence-based treatment with the cultural teachings and traditions of the Coast Salish people.Qwa'ya'hud has been married for eight years and is the proud father of four children. He believes that recovery is strengthened through culture, connection, and community, and he is honored to walk alongside others as they begin and continue their journey toward healing.
