Aquatic Invasive Species

Mission Statement

The mission of the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) division is a collective effort to defend the Lummi tidelands from the harmful effects of all aquatic invasive species. The AIS’s work, in collaboration with the community, supports Lummi Natural Resource’s goal to protect and preserve “Our Sche Lang en,” the Lummi Nation’s traditional way of life, the tidelands, and fisheries. AIS ensures that efforts to enhance habitats within our treaty-protected, Usual and Accustomed (UA) fishing territory will prevent invasive species from destroying salmon estuary habitat from preying upon native shellfish such as juvenile clams, oysters, and Dungeness crabs. Paramount is the Tribe’s effort to control and drive European green crabs (EGC) toward functional eradication, which mitigates the harmful effects of EGC out-competing near-shore native species and damaging critical habitat.
